Coreth
Coreth is a human city located at the end of the river bearing its name, where the deep forest butts up against the impassible Abbolith Mountains. Founded in time immemorial, Coreth is populated overwhelmingly with native Thirithians; very few visitors have set roots in the city. While visitors have become more accepted since the standing peace with Landtor, some level of suspicion and insularity still exists.
Lumbering is the main staple of the Corethian economy, though proper shipping remains an ordeal due to the odd nature of the Coreth River. Rather than flowing towards the ocean, it flows into Coreth from the west, snaking through the city then into the forest where it falls into the mythical Cavern of Doom. No one alive has traversed its depths, and even legends do not pretend any knowledge of what lies beneath. Coreth’s standing army is the largest in New America, dwarfing its nearest competitors. Constant skirmishes with the orcs of the north keep the city from turning its attention against its human neighbors, likely contributing to the continued peace between the human settlements.
Leader: Captain General, the Ever Munificent, his Primacy, Earl Bohan the Glorious, Murderer of Coreth (Shortened: The Captain General). Though the second son, Bohan led Coreth’s forces into battle against the visitors of Landtor during both campaigns. His efforts were considered a success, although ultimately his father decided to make peace with the Landtorians after the natives of Brith chose to ally with them. Bohan was tasked with negotiating the peace treaty, most notably drafting the agreement governing the cycling of troops to help defend Mountainhome. Upon the death of his father, Dedlor the Munificent, it was revealed that the firstborn son, Tryon, would be passed over due to his perceived laziness and lack of intellect. Tryon disappeared in the year 17, 4 years after his brother’s coronation. Rumors say he went to explore the Cavern of Doom.
Important Figures:
1. General, His Ever-Glorious Grace, Viscount Norbert, Glorious Keeper of the Forest: A cousin recently elevated to serve as The Captain General’s closest advisor, Prince Norbert has spent his life exploring the forests abutting the formidable Abbolith Mountains. Prince Norbert is the son of one of the few humans to ever cross the mountains and return to tell the tale.
2. Vicereine, Her All Matchless Immensity Eibeth, The Countess Determined, Decimator of Orcs: Upon the elevation of Bohan, he appointed Eibeth, his most trusted general, to lead the forces of Coreth. Under her command, the orcs have been pushed back further and further, until recent incursions have seen the use of magical arts unmatched amongst the humans. This has caused Eibeth much consternation as of late, but she still enjoys Bohan’s full support.
3. Viceroy, His Ever Heroic Honor, Duke Kragar the Devout Cradler of Coreth: Kragar is a visitor who has proved his worth to Coreth through ridiculously heroic battlefield exploits. His unprecedented appointment as commander of the city guard shook Coreth’s political circles to the core, but stood the test of blood whereupon Kragar defeated a challenger in unarmed combat within seconds using wrestling moves never before seen on Thirith. As is custom, the man committed suicide and his name was stricken from all scrolls and logs forever more, securing Kragar the position unless he loses Bohan’s favor, which is unlikely.
4. General Billington, His Most Supreme Grandeur, Duke Deadly, Hero of Coreth: The Duke Deadly is little more than a court jester, but his heroics at the Battle of the Wood against an orc invasion were enough to earn him a title. Billington is the first to know everything and anything going on in Coreth, and some whisper than he runs a secret underground guild of spies.
5. Voula Viglis: Voula is a mysterious man who claims to have entered the Cavern of Doom, exploring for a full day before making his way back to the surface. Very few believe him, even though he only claims to have seen the first few caves of the likely vast complex.
Important Locations:
1. The Palace of the Blue Bricks: The royal palace of Coreth, so named because of the hue of the special rocks used in its construction. The palace is the largest and tallest building in all of the city, easily seen from almost anywhere within (or without) the walls.
2. The Bank of New America: This solid brick building houses the central bank of the kingdom. It previously hosted the peace negotiations between the human settlements after the second war. At Garreth Spencer's suggestion, it was chosen to house the bank so as to separate the crown of Coreth from the kingdom's funds since there is no one ruler. As such, the bank contains the weights, measures and coin presses used to create the kingdom's silver coinage. A representative from each major settlement resides within the building to provide equal observation of the work and items stored there. Though entitled, Toth does not presently have a representative assigned.
3. The Council of War: This building houses the offices of Coreth's Army. Over the decades, an extensive bureaucracy of honorary appointments and royal charters has bloated the war machine of Coreth. Upon her assignment, Eibeth determined to cut through all of this to create one tight-knit command over all the forces. So far, she has made little progress.
4. The Clock Tower: Built by Ardel before he left Coreth for Landtor, the mechanism of this clock is based off of Gareth’s watch and has remained precise for years.
5. The Troll's Hangout: Until recently a boring establishment, this tavern has become the talk of all Coreth for the captive currently shown chained in behind it's main bar: a troll.
6. The City Guard: This building houses the headquarters of the city guard. Part police force, part fire brigade, part reinforcements for the Army of Coreth, the city guard and its commander diligently maintain order within the walls of the city.
7. Queilly's House of Everything: Queilly Slamoran is the proprietor of this general store, tavern, gambling hall and house of ill repute. Kragar keeps a close watch on this establishment (in more ways than one). Anything and everything can be found here from rare items to illicit information. General Billington is frequently seen entering from a rear door.
8. Central Market: The central market of Coreth operates 24 hours a day, though some activities only occur at night…
9. Tasso Khommor: Coreth’s finest armorer. Purveyor of the finest bows in the land, though all manner of weaponry and armor can be found on his shelves. Tasso also operates an archery training facility on the site.
10. King Edrilth Cemetery: The Kings of Coreth lie here in a large crypt, surrounded by subjects from the lowest pauper to the most trusted advisors of the court.
11. Skaith Thunderdome: the public arena of Coreth is named for an ancient legendary knight who slayed the last green dragon to league the fledgling city centuries ago. Jousts, chariot races, large public events, and even executions are held here regularly.
12. The Green Dragon Inn and Rooming House: legend says that when the first incarnation of this large building was being constructed, a green dragon flew over the city, landed on her roof, and crushed the building to the ground before flying off. It was subsequently rebuilt more solid. The current owner and proprietor is a strange looking man with oddly colored skin named Kielick Havman.
13. Misfud Estate: This large compound is the estate of the Misfud family, a powerful trading clan going back generations. Many rumors surround the family, but officially they have always been treated as upstanding members of Coreth’s elite.
14. The Docks: The dock yards are rowdy on either bank, yet this part of the city is the engine of Coreth’s dominance throughout the region. Many a lump on the head or of gold in the pocket can be earned here.
15. Slippery Wheel Inn: a rough and rowdy inn along the river where gambling and drinking are a 24/7 activity.
16. Lumber Yards: Coreth’s most productive industry, lumbering, is centered here on the edge of the great forests that spread west to the Abbolith Mountains.
17. Counting House Merchant’s Guild: The headquarters of the powerful merchant’s guild is located here amongst the teeming masses of workers necessary to keep the industry of trade alive.
18. Alear’s Barn: Purveyor of the finest bred horses in the land, at least according to himself.
19. Farmer’s Village: the majority of the city’s farmers live in this small village just outside the city walls.
20. Searle the Alchemist: purveyor of the finest Oron balms and salves in all Coreth. A) Salve: 50 sp (2 uses 1d8 ea) B) Balm: 25 sp (must be bound, 1 use, 1d12) C) Bandages: 9sp x10 or 1sp ea
21. Lord Heffernan’s College of the Highest Knowledge: This is the premier (and only) institution of higher learning in all of New America.
