Landtor
Landtor is a mid-sized walled human town on the north-east coast of the New America peninsula. Its population is approximately 500, primarily being inhabited by the original visitors and their offspring. They have resigned themselves to making a new life on Thirith rather than trying to get back to Earth. Landtor is known for its bleak and dreary appearance, and the similar attitude expressed by its inhabitants.
Landtor was first settled in the Year of Migration, which has since become year 0 on the Thirithian Calendar after the Battles of Landtor. It now lives in peaceful co-existence with the surrounding cities under the banner of “New America”.
Fishing and corn farming are the primary industries of Landtor. Corn was first planted here by a Visitor who happened to have a sack of seeds with him when he travelled. As the surrounding Thirithians gained a taste for the new food, it became a delicacy and Landtor prospered. The Battles of Landtor started as raids on Landtorian corn fields.
Leader: Mayor Paul Merino, father of the Landtorian hero Jesse, was elected mayor after the death of Garreth Spencer early in the year 22 from a devasting flu. Paul has pledged to maintain Garreth’s even keel, both within the town and in relations with the larger cities of New America.
Important Figures:
1. Elise Spencer: Garreth’s widow. Originally from South Carolina, she visited 12 years ago and married Garreth soon after. She will primarily be found at her bake shop or next door at her longtime home.
2. Ardel: The blacksmith. Ardel is a Thirithian Human originally from Coreth. During the first Battle of Landtor, he chose to side with the Visitors over his people, resulting in a lifetime ban from his home city, even after peace was achieved. Ardel is a skilled blacksmith, a loner, and a shrewd businessman. He is a font of information about Coreth and the surrounding forests, if he likes you.
3. Joseph Sebanko: The Doctor. Joseph was a surgeon in Philadelphia. He is 42 years old and practices general medicine for the people of the town. His services are provided on a barter basis; he will not accept silver. He is especially fond of the rare Oron herbs which can be found in the forests surrounding Coreth, as he has grown quite skilled at using them to create healing balms and philtres (potions). Dr. Sebanko is desperately in need of grapes to cultivate a vineyard.
4. Corey: The Sergeant at Arms. Corey is originally from New Jersey and was serving in the US Army when he traveled. Corey arrived with the second group of Visitors in the year 8. He is 32 years old, black, a lefty, and has been in Landtor for 5 years. Garreth immediately put him on the town militia and quickly promoted him to second in command due to his being the only visitor with military experience. He is fiercely loyal to Garreth. He has never revealed his last name and has sworn to remain single as he has a family back on Earth.
5. Johnathan Wagner: Diplomat. Johnathan is originally from Dallas, Texas. He wears a garish version of a Cowboy hat that he had made himself on Thirith. He travels regularly to the surrounding cities acting as Garreth’s representative in negotiations and transacting trade. He is currently away, engaged in talks with the Briths to bring a shipbuilding company to Landtor. Johnathan is loud and brash, but he knows the lay of the land and can safely travel between Landtor and Coreth with ease.
6. Jesse Marino: After the election of his father as mayor, Jesse agreed to stay in town to serve as second in command of the militia, lending his extensive experience to the town’s defense.
Important Locations:
1. Billy’s Inn and Tavern: Comfortable inn and tavern frequented by travelers and the nearby farmers. Billy traveled with Gareth’s group. Previously ran a bar in Tulsa, OK.
2. Gatehouse and Barracks: Corey is usually found here working or relaxing after his shift. He keeps a small room in the gatehouse. The single men of the town militia live in the barracks.
3. Elise’s Home: Elise’s home is one of the finest structures in Landtor due to her husband’s expertise in carpentry. Almost the entire home was built by Gareth himself.
4. Elise’s Bakery: Elise’s bakery wafts amazing smells throughout the town from dawn until early afternoon when she heads home. She always has 2-3 helpers with her. Elise mostly bakes bread using the local wheat, but she is also known to occasionally have pizza and cakes available.
5. Michael’s Motel: this large motel, just east of the gate is run by a shrewd businessman named Michael Townshend who traveled with the second group to settle in Landtor. He is originally from London and was a proprietor of numerous clubs and bars.
6. Abandoned Church: Immediately upon settling the town, one of the original travelers, David Holden, a preacher from Birmingham, AL built this once beautiful church. He tried in vain to convince the people of Landtor to continue whatever faith they had back home, but with divine intervention seemingly lost, the church failed to catch on. David still lives in his burnt-out church, subsisting on handouts from the townsfolk who truly feel sorry for him.
7. The Docks and Warehouses: with Brithian ships now sailing further and further every year, the docks of Landtor are always bustling with sailors and dockhands from all over New America.
8. Marketplace: The Landtor marketplace is growing steadily in line with the shipping industry. Gareth has assigned some of the militia to patrol regularly as unsavory types have taken notice of the growing riches of the stalls as of late.
9. Ardel’s Blacksmith and Shop: Ardel is a quick, stoic Thirithian who chose to set up shop amongst the travelers immediately upon witnessing first-hand their determination and drive. Originally from Coreth, he holds a wealth of knowledge about that dangerous forest.
10. Refugee Camp: Poor refugees from all over New America (and beyond) are welcome in Landtor, as long as they keep to the refugee camp when not working or seeking work. Gareth himself checks this area daily to keep a lid on any brewing trouble.
11. Landtor’s Municipal Building: This is the central meeting place for Landtor’s council and for any visiting dignitaries from the other towns/cities.
12. First Heroes’ Tower: After extensive repairs, this ancient tower has become the basecamp for the First Heroes of Landtor.
13. Doctor’s Office: Joseph Sebanko’s office.
