Oak Tree Island
Oak Tree Island is a small, rocky island located northeast of the Kingdom of Grandish. In the common year 11, a small fishing boat from Weton was blown off course in a storm, only to fortuitously land on her shores. In awe of its thick forest of oak trees, Captain Henri immediately realized that shipbuilding in Grandish would never be the same again. After recovering their navigational equipment from a cave full of nasty jermlaines, the crew returned to report their discovery. Soon after, a small settlement was in place to facilitate lumbering and shipbuilding, greatly increasing the range of the kingdom’s ships.
Leader: Leaders of the settlement swap out frequently. The lumbering union based in Weton typically replaces its bosses every 6 months.
Important Figures:
1. Windmill Master Rico Smarthalian: Rico was one of the fishermen who discovered Oak Tree Island. He returned to the island with the first expedition. Once settled, he decided to remain on the island permanently. Rico obtained an official charter to operate the only windmill on the island, an arrangement which has made him very wealthy.
2. Brot Venezian: Brot runs the only tavern on the island. Brot was raised in Caestor, a fact which does not easily endear him to the Wetonites who make up the bulk of Oak Tree Island’s workers. None shun his ale of course. Few know how Brot came to be on the island.
Important Locations:
1. Lumber Mill: The most important building on the island. The lumber mill is bustling nearly all day long, every day.
2. Rico’s Windmill: the island’s windmill serves as a grist mill, water pump, lighthouse, and meeting hall.
3. Docks and Storehouses: The docks of Oak Tree Island are always bustling with lumber ships and fishing boats in port to resupply or drop their catch.
4. Jermlaine & Tubs: Brot’s tavern, here on the frontier of the kingdom, is a rowdy place where the fights are considered boring if blood is not spilling into patrons’ mugs.
5. Cave: currently empty, this cave was formerly home to the family of jermlaines who stole Captain Henri’s navigational equipment when his crew discovered the island. There are rumors that a mining concern has earned the rights to dig for riches.
6. Arno Karmarian's Hut: Once a very well-respected fisherman, Arno survived a Goblin ambush at sea and weeks of imprisonment in the Goblin Wasteland in year 17. He is the only person known to have ever escaped. Since his return, he lives on the outskirts of town to the north of the lumber mill.
