Brith Village
Brith Village lies barely 5 miles from the city that shares its name. Until the summer of 21, it existed as part of the city, merely a farming “suburb” falling under the protection of its larger sister. When a fervent religious revival swept the area, the prominent family in this area decided it was time to break away from the more liberal city. After much negotiation, the town finally earned its independence with a strict agreement never to build docks along its part of the shoreline, and free-trade requirements to ensure food grown in the town’s fields would remain available to city markets.
Leader: William Stoughton is the mayor of the newly minted town. He is a deeply religious man with no ties to the elite of the city, though he does reluctantly submit to Mayor Phips on regional matters.
Important Figures:
1. Robert Putney: Robert is the patriarch of the most powerful family in town. They own half the farming land and have for generations. When the final negotiations for independent governance were nearing an end, Robert used his influence to have the lines drawn to ensure his family’s holdings would make up a majority of the new town’s land.
2. Ann Putney: Ann is Robert’s young daughter. Recently, she came to possess a mysterious chalice which she claims gives her the power to root out witches in their midst. She supposedly found the chalice while bathing in the town lake with some friends. she has since returned the chalice to Elizabeth Maher.
3. Decrease Maher: Decrease is an elderly and learned man, well respected in both the village and city. He splits time between the two, even after the official separation. Decrease is adamantly religious, but suspicious of the true nature of the town’s minister.
4. Woll Maher: Woll is Decrease’s son. He works the family farms and commands much respect around the town. Though he frequently clashes with the Putney’s, he remains loyal to Minister Paris against his father’s wishes.
5. Elizabeth Maher: Elizabeth is the young daughter of Woll Maher. She is the bearer of the Chalice of Inner Sight, which she uses to help both her village mediate disputes and determine the best placement of its various crops.
6. Sheriff Corwin: George Corwin is the current sheriff of Brith Village. He is also a deeply religious man who takes his orders both from the Mayor and the church.
Important Locations:
1. Meeting Hall and Church: The town meeting hall is recently constructed and has created some division amongst the populace due to its cost. Minister Paris resides here along with his family. Religious service is held weekly, and attendance of all citizens is required.
2. Stoughton House: This is the mayor’s home. It has been in his family for generations, built by his great-great-great grandfather many years ago.
3. Putney Manor and Farms: The Putney manor house the second largest structure in the town. The family’s lands stretch far south and some of the most fertile in the region, garnering them great wealth year after year.
4. Corey Homestead: Giles and Martha Corey reside in this quaint house. They are both elderly and have no living children. The Corey’s are thorns in the sides of the Putneys as they refuse to sell their land which adjoins the large holdings of the more well-known family.
5. Maher Home: This is the residence of Woll Maher, and where his father Decrease resides whenever he is in town.
6. Jail: Originally a farmer’s home, this building has been converted into a jail recently to hold the accused witches.
